SAINT PAUL, MINN. -- Hunger Solutions Minnesota applauded the new Farm Bill, Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, that was recently introduced in the U.S. Senate, as being on the right path to help the 621,000 Minnesotans who need access to programs such as food stamps, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Hunger Solutions Executive Director Colleen Moriarty praised the vision of the Senate Farm Bill’s Nutrition Title. The Farm Bill is the single largest funding source for anti-hunger programs in the country. In particular, she cited Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith for creating bipartisan legislation that will help the millions of Americans affected by the bill. Minnesota’s senators have travelled the state listening to the concerns of Minnesota’s farmers, SNAP recipients, and advocates.
“I can say with absolute certainty that our congressional leadership had a major impact on this bill,” Moriarty said. “Senators Klobuchar and Smith have helped to establish a positive direction for the 621,000 Minnesotans and the 42 million Americans who need programs like SNAP to help feed their families.”
Among other things, the new Farm Bill language, which sets national agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and forestry policy, establishes a platform for the the Department of Human Services and the Department of Employment and Economic Development to collaborate on programs that should garner bipartisan support.
